Origination

The Christian Ardinger Chapter was organized through the untiring efforts of Mrs. Ellen Ardinger Zeller and Mrs. Jacob W. Vorous, members of the Conococheague Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. Thirty-two charter members met with the Honorable Wilson King Barnes Sr, then First Vice President of the Maryland Society, on May 22, 1971, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Vorous in Hagerstown, Maryland, to form the Chapter. Jacob A. Hoffman was elected President. The Chapter Charter was presented on October 28, 1971, at The Venice Motel in Hagerstown.

Namesake

The namesake Christian Ardinger was selected to honor Mrs. Ellen Zeller for her efforts in the Chapter formation, and many Chapter members who were descendants of Christian Ardinger, c1745- 1802, who settled in Williamsport, Maryland after the war. Christian Ardinger ("Christy Artinger") was a Private in Capt. Rippey's Company, 6th Battalion, Cumberland County, PA Militia on April 9, 1776. On June 13, 1777, he was listed on the rolls of Capt. Alexander Peetiles' Company No. 4, 1st Battalion, Cumberland County, PA Militia, and last appears on the rolls of August 17, 1781. He moved to Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland after the war, and is buried in the Riverview Cemetery.

Activities

The Chapter has been active in Washington County historical research, the high school Bronze Good Citizenship Medal program, and the “How They Vote" campaign. It meets regularly in support of SAR activities in the western parts of Maryland and conducts grave markers, present medals and awards and holds other activities in the county.
