Maryland Society at the 2013 NSSAR Congress

I just returned from the 2013 NSSAR Congress in Kansas City and am pleased to report that we, the Maryland Society, were well represented.  Please find attached the group photograph of our members and their ladies that was taken after the formal banquet on Tuesday evening.  This year we had three first time attendees among the ten official voting delegates representing the Maryland Society:

  • Eugene "Gene" Moyer from the Sgt Lawrence Everhart Chapter
  • Gary Neal from the Col Nicholas Ruxton Moore Chapter
  • Tilghman "Tim" McCabe, Jr. from the General William Smallwood Chapter.

In addition to attending as a delegate, Gene also participated in the many Color Guard functions along with NSSAR Vice Commander Dave Hoover and MDSSAR Trustee Lou Raborg.  They were kept very busy with the many Color Guard events throughout the Congress.  It is very impressive to see over 50 Color Guard members in their periodical dress uniforms.

This year, I am pleased to report that the Maryland Society received the following awards at the awards ceremony on Monday evening:

  • The C.A.R. Activities Award for service to the Children of the American Revolution.
  • The Admiral William R. Furlong Memorial Award for fulfilling the qualifications for presenting flag certificates.
  • VPG Duane Tackitt received The Thomas Jefferson Bond, Jr. Memorial Photographic Award for submitting the photograph that was most representative of the spirit of patriotism.  He was quite surprised.
  • Several Liberty Medals were also awarded to our members and I will name the awardees after they have been honored at a future meeting of the Maryland Society.
  • At the formal banquet on Tuesday evening, President General Stephen A. Leishman presented the Lafayette Service Medal to Tim McCabe on behalf of the National Society for his work with John Sinks on the Maryland 1783 Tax List.  It is a rare honor to receive a national medal directly from a sitting President General.  Congratulations Tim!

Overall, it was an interesting and informative Congress, and I urge everyone to make plans to attend the 2014 Congress in Greenville, South Carolina next July.

Respectfully,

J. Patrick Warner, President
Maryland Society, Sons of the American Revolution
