Wreaths Across America at Cheltenham Veteran’s Cemetery

On Saturday, February 1, 2020, the John Hanson Chapter MDSSAR coordinated the effort to pick up the 14,000+ wreaths that were laid on December 14th.   The John Hanson Chapter provides the Location Coordinator position to support the effort at the Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery.  The Cemetery has 28,000+ graves and gets its wreaths solely through sponsorships.  A volunteer staff headed up by our Chapter’s own Compatriot George Satterthwaite with 6 other dedicated folks from the community. It has become a year round effort for this great cause.  With the help of over 250 volunteers from all across the area, we got an early start that morning to carefully pick up all of the wreaths and properly dispose them.  Thanks to all of the volunteers that came out and a special thanks goes out to the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department’s Seventh Battalion firehouses for bringing over 35 firefighters to help pick up the wreaths.
